Listening to Sam Cooke on the Day After My Wedding Day
Joe Betz
I love you for sentimental reasons becomes the day’s refrain until my wife chopping onions says
no you love me because you have no choice she shakes pepper into the soup to taste
but baby it was my choice to love you and she says baby you’re calling
me baby now and she’s laughing
at my singing but the sun is shining and the peas are planted behind
the broccoli the birdfeeder drawing cardinals a male and female look
how they love each other each watching for the neighbor’s cat beautiful simple when
one eats the other waits
